After that brief update from the airport, I had no more zippy internet connection for two weeks. However, some things I wondered/ realised/ learned whilst away:
Certain hawkers have no ethics whatsoever and will serve you day-old chicken with crawling maggots if it is dark enough so they think they can get away with it. Ugh!
What is this strange switch the brain makes into Overseas Shopping Holiday Mode? In this mode, you begin to purchase things you would ordinarily never dream of looking at (gold heels, for example) but, somehow, be so convinced that they are a bargain, will go with every single thing you own, and you will wear them until they fall apart. (In the case of shoes from Vincci, however, this is true because they will fall apart before you've worn them twice. Yes, 19 ringgit, but do not be tempted!)
Food not made at home is rarely up to scratch if you are a Malaysian aunty/wife/mother/homemaker:
"The food was good, ah?"
"Okay only lah ... so so"
"Eh, try some chicken curry!"
"Where you buy this one?"
"From that stall in SS 14"
"How much?"
"Five ringgit"
"Hah? Five ringgit?! Not worth it lah. Chih, too many bones. No meat"
But anyone who can whip up such delicious homely dishes as kangkung chilli, lala (clams) with chilli and garlic, and paku (wild fern) with shrimp can say whatever they like.
I still do not like durian. Not that I made any re-attempts to.
Malaysians are big on freebies and promotions. This is all good. I bought a pair of Chucks and got a free bag and stickers. Then there was some promotion on these amazing massage chairs and I conned my uncle into chatting with the salesperson for 45 minutes while I enjoyed a free back massage. Of course we did not purchase. The chair weighed about 70kg and my pack was already close to the 20kg maximum. It also cost RM10,000.
More photos in the usual spot.
